Traffic Guidance Schemes
A Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS) sets out the arrangement of temporary traffic control devices needed to safely guide vehicles and pedestrians around, through, or past a worksite or temporary hazard.
A standard TGS will show:
-
The location of the worksite
-
The proposed traffic management approach
-
Safe movement pathways for both vehicles and pedestrians
It also details the placement and spacing of signage, devices, pavement markings, containment fencing and barriers, arrow boards or variable message signs (VMS), and any roadwork speed zones.

When do you need a Traffic Guidance Scheme?
A TGS is required for any works that affect the public road network or footpaths, or where people must be safely separated from moving vehicles.
Councils and road authorities require a TGS to approve permits for works that impact roads or pedestrian traffic. Importantly, only TGSs that meet all Local Council traffic control requirements will be approved. Submitting an inadequate TGS can result in delays or rejection of your permit application.

How is a Traffic Guidance Scheme created?
We take care of the entire process for you, so you can focus on your project. Here’s how it works:
-
Project briefing – You provide details of your works, and we confirm the traffic control requirements.
-
Requirements assessment – We establish the traffic management needs for the project.
-
Traffic analysis – We review daily traffic volumes to determine signage type and size, and confirm whether the road is managed by State Government, Local Council, or privately.
-
Site condition review – We assess local factors such as speed limits, conflicting signage requiring concealment, road conditions and usage, and the presence of schools, bus stops, driveways, or emergency service access.
-
Scheme design – Our professional and accredited designers prepare a tailored TGS specific to your site.
-
Drafting & compliance – Using advanced planning software and our expertise, we develop a TGS that meets all relevant legal, council, and professional standards.

The end result is a clear, compliant, and effective Traffic Guidance Scheme that ensures the safety of all road users, keeps your project moving, and supports fast council approval.
